History In the 1920's, Judge
Walter J. LaBuy purchased 473 acres of farmland from Arthur E. Diercks, an
Algonquin real estate and insurance man. The Judge built a home for each of his
children and his wife. Known as the "stucco" houses, only one remains in almost
its original condition as the others have had numerous additions. The five
houses are located along the Indian Trail.
Originally most of the early homes built in
Lake in the Hills were summer homes. Judge LaBuy is credited for planting the
many pines and oak trees that are now so attractive to home buyers. Woods Creek
was not far from the stucco homes. Through the Judge's efforts, the creek was
dammed up, creating Lake In The Hills in 1923. Today's lake is not the
original. It was enlarged in later years. In 1961, Platt deeded over the lake
property to the Lake In The Hills Property Owners Association.
